It has been over a year since we moved into our house and it was finally time to paint and really decorate both kids’ rooms. We started with purging some old toys that were given to some younger family members. He wanted to keep the same bed, which is a loft bed with a slide that we purchased from Amazon a few years ago. Other than that, his room was a blank slate.
Our son chose a gaming theme, which we learned was really easy to overdo. We picked a color scheme centered around Fortnite colors and painted a large, geometric accent wall. With this wall dominating most of the room’s attention, we wanted to balance the rest of the room with a few standout decorations.
As always, we started with a few bargain stores to catch as many deals as possible.
At Five Below we grabbed these two metal gaming signs.
A trip to Walls Bargain Center netted a cheap Fortnite comforter and pillow case (how lucky was that!).
Next, we traveled to Dirt Cheap. We had planned on building a toy box, but then we came across this amazing storage bench which matched our color scheme and only cost $40. This was such a great deal! One of the legs was broken, but we just took all of the legs off so it would sit lower anyways. It’s the perfect height for our son and now we don’t have to worry about toys getting lost under it.
Our final successful stop was at Hobby Lobby. We knew they had plenty of gaming-themed decorations, but saved this location for last since this store can be on the pricier end. Luckily they were having a sale because we hit the mother-load. We found this great game controller painting to hang over his bed and this cool game-on/game-over controller decoration to hang on the opposite wall. We continued browsing through and came across these fantastic game controller hooks, which are perfect for holding his headsets. They were all a little scuffed up, but a little touch up paint later should make them look like new.
Still to do:
We still want to buy or build some shelves for his Nintendo Switch and for a couple of other decorations. However, we haven’t settled on a design yet.
We would also like to replace his bedroom and closet doors, but our budget says that is for another day.
Final Result:
We are ecstatic with how this room turned out. It is perfect for his current hobby and the accent wall, bed, and storage bench should stay relevant even as his hobbies change. And perhaps the biggest plus - he loves his room so much he is keeping it clean without having to be asked! (A parent’s dream!)
We hope you like it as much as he did. Our next post will focus on our daughter’s room, which was much more challenging.
All the best,
